Gambling at Ohio's casinos and racinos jumps 10% in May

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ohio’s casinos and racinos had a robust month in May, with gambling revenue after paying out winnings up 10.4 percent from May a year ago, reports released Friday’s by the state’s lottery and casino control commissions showed.

Locally, revenue jumped 9.3% at the MGM Northfield Park, 15% at JACK Cleveland Casino and 17.3% at JACK Thistledown Racino.

Statewide at Ohio’s 11 casinos and racinos, revenue totaled $169.4 million, up from $153.5 million in May 2018. About a third of this money goes to the state in taxes and fees.

  • The seven racinos generated $95.9 million million from slot machines, up 13.2% from $84.8 million in May 2018, the Ohio Lottery Commission reported.
  • The four casinos in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo had a total of $73.5 million in revenue from slots and table games, up 7% from $68.7 million, the Ohio Casino Control Commission reported.

May marked the second month for the new MGM Northfield Park, formerly the Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park. The facility remained Ohio’s busiest gambling operation, reporting revenue from slots of $21.9 million, up from $20 million under the Hard Rock name in May 2018.

At the the Cleveland market’s two JACK Entertainment properties, revenue totaled nearly $31 million:

Only Ohio’s four casinos are permitted to offer table games. The Cleveland casino led with $8.9 million, accounting for 38% of table game revenue statewide.
